During industrialization, several large industrial plants and the Leopoldau gasworks were established along the Nordbahn in Leopoldau. The mixed-use Neu Leopoldau district was built on the site of the municipal gasworks, which was shut down around 50 years ago. The new district is characterized by the inclusion of the factory buildings built in 1912 and the old stock of avenue trees. On our tour, we encounter idyllic allotment garden settlements, building groups and neighborhood houses, community spaces and new solutions for residents’ mobility.

Planners have responded to the challenges of climate change and the needs of young people with exciting projects, and we are also exploring this question. The Neu Leopoldau district was part of the Vienna International Building Exhibition until the end of 2022.
