Hietzing is one of the greenest districts in Vienna, with over 70% green space of its total area. Our walk starts right at the Hietzing subway station, where we learn more about the Wientalradweg – also called “Vienna’s first bicycle highway”. At the same time, since its opening, it has also become a popular recreational area for the Viennese. But how ideal or safe is this area really? Here we talk about Wien River regulation, air quality and shared space.

Our walk continues through the park of Schönbrunn Palace. This is popular with both tourists and locals. Especially during the pandemic period, the Viennese recognized the importance of this 160-hectare facility, which is part of the Federal Gardens. We discover here the botanical and Japanese garden. Topics such as citizen science projects, natural monuments, Habsburg expeditions and much more will accompany us.

From here we head towards the landscape conservation area on the edge of the Vienna Woods, where we will discover how close the city and the forest have grown together in Hietzing. The way back from here passes the most beautiful villas of Hietzing.
