Urban wilderness Special community garden projects Green courtyards of municipal buildings from the “Red Vienna” era Wolfganggasse housing estate Climate initiative

With around 100 municipal buildings from different eras, Meidling is at the forefront of social housing. Many of them, often built like castles with various atriums, are now listed buildings. The trees that were planted in the 1920s and 1930s are now great sources of shade and cool the living space during hot summer days. Why are there large and healthy trees in old municipal buildings when newly planted urban trees just around the corner only reach an average age of 25 to 30 years? Through such comparisons and questions during the tour, we will take a critical look at the green spaces of yesterday and today.

It is also exciting that the Wolfganggasse housing estate in Meidling is one of the quarters of the Vienna International Building Exhibition (IBA). On the 31,000m2 area around the former Wolfganggasse coach house, a new housing estate is being built exclusively with subsidized apartments and offers for different generations and living situations.

On our walk, we pass the Meidlinger Markt, which is one of Vienna’s most popular markets, but unfortunately also ranks second on Vienna’s heat map. Two years ago, residents in the area launched a participatory climate district project that will soon make the district greener and more climate-friendly.

The tour will include community gardens, an innovative neighborhood garden project and green facades of all kinds.
