Green façade of MA 31 (Vienna Water)

The start of our tour is a former flak tower, which not only houses thousands of marine animals and plants, but also a sensational climbing wall and, most recently, the highest greened public wall in Vienna: a 35-meter-high facade greening with 8,500 plants in 750 troughs.

On our way, in many places, like city stories, climbing plants of all kinds entwine up the walls and over the boundaries of houses. This not only pleases our eye, but also contributes to climate protection in the district: wild vines on historic houses, a sophisticated facade garden at the headquarters of the Vienna Water Department. We discover Grätzeloasen (community spots in the hood) and Gstätten (urban fallow) – and even the social housing is anything but gray!

Street art also enlivens the (in summer) hot facades, tells district stories and brings current issues into focus. And this on houses of the past!

At our stops, there will be an opportunity to reflect critically and playfully at the same time on how sustainable the greening projects are and how we can all make the city greener and more colorful.
